The beginning

Alfred, like most people, suffered from cold sores. However, unlike most, he had a knack for entrepreneurship and a unique inclination to experiment with chemistry in his kitchen.

Alfred decided to address his condition and came up with a solution. He created a unique Carmex the lip balm formula, experimented a lot, and thus the first ones were born Carmex lip balms. In 1937, Alfred and his wife were making Carmex in their home kitchen and bottled themselves Carmex lip balm into glass containers with black lids.

Alfredas didn't believe in advertising; he would personally visit pharmacies to offer his product. If the pharmacy wasn't interested, he would leave them a dozen. 1930

Alfred Woelbing lost his job in the purchasing department of a department store in Milwaukee and began producing a product called Lyptone. It was a lip-protecting product, and Alfred sold the rights to this brand for $2,500 – which was a significant amount of money at the time. In 1937, Alfred Woelbing created... Carmex and founded the company Carma Laboratories, Inc. Since then, the lip care industry has changed beyond recognition.

1940

Alfred was selling Carmex Classic lip balm from the trunk of his car and its popularity began to grow. News about the product's effectiveness spread by word of mouth.

During the Second World War, "Uncle Sam" needed all the lanolin supplies so that the military could lubricate equipment and protect it from rust. This somewhat limited Carmex production possibilities, as lanolin was one of the main ingredients.

After the war, Alfred continued his classical... Carmex lip balm production from his home, using only a kettle and an electric stove, pouring the mixture by hand into glass containers.

1950

The news about the effective product continued to spread, and demand began to exceed the Woelbing family's homemade production capacity. Therefore, in 1957... Carmex moved from the Woelbing house to Wauwatosa, a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

1960s

The first advertising budget is allocated. Carmex lip balm. 10 dollars per year – he was paid for Carmex the license plate on the family car.

1970s

Alfred is resigning from his position as a salesperson but still plays a significant role. Carmex "in activity improvement."

In 1973, the son Don joins the activity. Mass production begins. Carmex lip balm production. After 3 years, Carma Laboratories, Inc. outgrew its facilities in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and the production was moved to Franklin, another suburb of Milwaukee. The factory remains in the same location to this day.

The 1980s

1990

The year 2000

In 2001, Alfred retired. At the age of 90, he used to work 8 hours a day and traveled more than 40 miles to work every day.

In 2002, Carmex became available in all 50 states, as well as in North America, Australia, Europe, and Asia. A new product was introduced. Carmex Cherry, the first Carmex Lip balm with flavor.

2004 – A new logistics center is opened.

In 2006, the first team of executive directors was hired, which revitalized a 70-year-old company. The market reach of the product and the variety of the assortment significantly increased.

2008 - An appearance on the "Oprah" show propels the Woelbing family and the entire... Carmex the family at the center of attention, proudly announcing that Carmex sold more than a billion lip balms.

In 2009, Don Woelbing retired. Carma Laboratories, Inc. remains in family hands and is managed by Alfred's grandsons, Paul and Eric Woelbing.
